I GOT A TICKET!

I am so angry right now.  I run out for a quick errand during my lunch break and my hubby calls about the baby... threw up and what not.  Anyways... of course I get pulled over heading west on Shaw just before the 41 freeway.  Yes yes, I understand... driving while on the cell phone is dangerous and against the law.  I deserve the ticket... even though it was kinda an emergency.  BUT $125!!!!  That is so outrageous.  The officer explained that it is $25 for the fine, $40 for the city to process the fee, and $60 for the state to process.  What??  This can't be right.  I want to cry.

So you are paying the officer $40 to write you a ticket and donating $60 to the state. That is ridiculous.

Welcome! You and Jenny (and Mike) do a great job every morning. Wow, I had no idea that the cell phone tickets were so high! I refuse to buy a bluetooth so most of the time I just don't answer the phone while I am driving, but sometimes you just can't help it. Sorry you got caught...

I understand your fusterations Evy. By the way welcome back to Fresno. I live in Northwest Fresno near Grantland and Bullard ave. Grantland and Parkway is closed for construction. The city or county has a detour that goes around about mile out. At that closure there is street named Tenya. There is a sign that says "residental access only", I use that road often to go to the shell station near by to avoid the speeders on Parkway ave. I was tickted on Tuesday because I failed to use the detour route. I was not only cited, I was told by the CHP that Tenya is a private road and that I was breaking the law by using that road. There is permit taken out on Grantland and Parkway only to close that intersection but not Tenya ave. How is it that I am a taxpayer and cannot access a county road? Only because of residents who think the roads are private and the general public have no right to use that road. I am upset and getting nowhere on how I broke the law? Take your cameras out on Grantland and Parkway ave around 8:00 am to 8:30 am and see all the drivers (and there is a lot) getting cited for a private road. Its illegal ! My neighbor and I went back to Tenya ave and told the CHP officer who was there enforcing the "private road " and told him there is no permit to close Tenya ave and looked at his paperwork agreed and he left. This about freedom and right to access a public county road not a private road. If the area residents want their road to be private then they should have their area a gated community.  This is unfair and you will find lots of area residents who were cited for no reason at all for not following a detour route ? My understanding is there is no permit to close Tenya ave then why are nearby residents being cited ?  There is no permit to close Tenya ave so therefore it should be accesable to all drivers.  I cannot wait to see what my fine will be.

I've almost been hit by cell phone-using drivers, seen them almost drive onto the center divider, and had to navigate around them when they were going 20 miles an hour in a 40 mile per hour zone. I don't sympathize with the anger over the size of the fine.

You didn't know it was a semi-emergency before you answered. Your excuse sounds a lot like those drivers who park in handicapped spots and complain that they were just pulling in for a quick stop after they get ticketed. I understand that fine is double what yours is. If you're not willing to invest in something hands-free, then pull over to answer.

How will you feel if one of these times you run a light or stop sign? I was visiting my mom in Visalia last month and read in the local newspaper a plea from a father who had lost his young son because a cell-phone using driver hit him.

All of the sarcastic remark makers should be ashamed of yourselves. The law is the law. No one is above it.

I just wanted to make one more point - maybe the fine should be doubled or even tripled with half going to the families of the victims of Cell phone using drivers. I remembered seing a news piece and googled "cell phone caused deaths" and found the following information:

Cell phone distraction causes 2,600 deaths and 330,000 injuries in the United States every year according to the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

It seems pretty callous to complain about a fine when you consider the above information.

So quit complaining and take your medicine! Many families have a much greater reason to complain.

Your points are much appreciated.  I agree that the money should go to families of those who are killed... but it doesn't.  The money goes to the government.  I never said I do not deserve the ticket... I do and I will pay the money owed.  But I will add, that these same studies show that it is not the holding onto the cell phone, but the "talking" that causes the problem.  So the fact that someone is using a hands-free device does not necessarily keep them from getting into an accident.  Having police spend their time monitoring whether someone is holding onto an object, to me, doesn't seem like the answer to this problem.

Sorry if this posting seemed callous... I am sure one one's comments were meant to offend, or disregard the price of human life.  Thank you for your comments.
