"Reading and Beyond" is looking for volunteers to help local kids learn to read.

I think it's a great way to volunteer! If you have 1 hours, 2x/week, for 3 months, here's the info!

Mission Statement:

Building foundations for children and families.

 

Description:

Reading and Beyond is an organization dedicated to improving the academic success of children in Fresno County. We work with children and families, from the child’s birth through high school, giving them the tools they need to be successful.

We do this through programs that prepare children to begin kindergarten, tutor school age children to grade level in reading, teach parents how to support their children in school, and help families develop healthy lifestyle habits.

 

                Title:

Volunteer Reading Tutor

 

Reports to:

Jenny Brietigam, After School Program Manager

 

Objective:

To help elementary-aged students improve reading skills through one-on-one tutoring in an after school program setting. Reading tutors promote a love of learning and self-esteem by being a positive and encouraging influence.

 

Qualifications:

No experience required.

 

Position Description:

Volunteers are matched with one child for a three month period in order to build trust and rapport.  Each after-school location is assigned a Reading and Beyond Site Coordinator to provide support for volunteers.

 

Training:

All volunteers will attend a 1 ½ hour training prior to beginning service. Topics to be covered are: reading strategies, volunteer requirements, etc. Ongoing support is provided by Reading and Beyond staff.

All volunteers must be fingerprinted at a cost of $20, which will be reimbursed with a receipt.

 

Time Commitment:

1 hour, 2 days a week, for at least 3 months.

§         First Covenant Church – 2727 N. First Street  Fresno, CA 93710

o        Mondays and Wednesdays 2:00-5:00pm

§         Hope Lutheran Church – 364 E. Barstow Avenue  Fresno, CA 93710

o        Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:00-5:00pm

§         Wesley Methodist Church – 1343 E. Barstow Avenue  Fresno, CA 93710

o        Mondays and Wednesdays 2:00-5:00pm

§         RAB Kings Canyon Office – 4756 E. Kings Canyon Road  Fresno, CA 93727          

o        Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 2:00-5:00pm

 

Age Requirement:

At least 14 years old.
