Should CBS47 run this commercial ???

A pro-marijuana group has just produced a new commercial - urging the legalization and taxation of California's largest cash crop.

They claim that taxing marijuana, could help solve the state's multi-billion dollar budget deficit.

But some tv stations are refusing to air the commercial, including KABC in Los Angeles, KGO in San Francisco and KNTV in San Jose.

Stations that ARE running the ad include KPIX in Oakland, KRON in San Francisco, and KOVR and KXTV in Sacramento.

Wanna watch it?  Click here.  I think it's pretty mild actually... and a little boring!

So, what do you think?  Should CBS47 run it?  We talked about all of this on the CBS47 Morning show Thursday.

That's nothing compared to the trash that Carl's Jr. runs. At least I wouldn't be horrified for my children to watch this commercial. I hate having to change the channel every time a soft-porn hamburger ad comes on.

Or what about those trashy commercials that have started running recently on some local stations, aimed at men, so they can - "increase your length."  Ack!!!!   I'm certainly no prude, but those commercials are just flat-out disgusting.

YES THIS IS A VERY NICE COMMERCIAL AND I DO AGREE ABOUT THE MEN PERFOMANCE COMMERCIALS THEY ARE SO STUPID "LOOK AT JOHN HE HAS MORE BOUNCE IN HIS STEP OH HE LOOKS SO MUCH BETTER, WHAT HAS HE DONE?" I THINK THOSE SHOULD BE ONLY SHOWN AFTER CHILDREN HOURS ARE OVER IF AT ALL. THE SAME WITH SEX LUBES. BUT THE MARIJUANA COMERCIAL WAS VERY CLEAN AND I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE OF THEM ON HOW IT CAN HELP ILLNESSES AND OUR STATE MONEY ISSUES ON COMMERCIALS. GIVE THE MONEY TO OUR STATE AND STATES PEOLPE AND NOT THE ILLEGAL OUTLAWS.

I think most TV stations will take the cash, regardless of content.

I think you should run the ad only because it would be wrong to choose not to broadcast a group simply because their message may not be one that you agree with.

This is a message to the people of California to choose. Not for the stations to not show. It is no different then hearing from local churchs, politicians and their views, tampoon ads or happy willy pills.
Show the ad and let the people make a choice if it is in bad taste

Run the ad...it's just the view of the group not of the station's. They are a paying customer.

Hmmmmm.... Surprisingly open-minded comments so far from the supposedly ultra-conservative Central Valley.  Is the budget crisis so severe, that we're all willing to consider unconventional ways of generating revenue?

run the ad!  From what I watched I see nothing wrong with it.  They are willing to pay taxes!  Hey there is rarely a time when the everyday person is willing to pay taxes.

I'm far from being a prude also....but, if you run the ad...it's LIKE condoning an illegal activity.  Notice I put caps on like because some people do not understand the diff. between a paid ad, and personal opinion.

I feel there is nothing wrong in consuming herbs...but the government has laws we have to abide by...wheather you like it or not.

The government once had laws against alcohol, right?  (Prohibition.)  They finally figured out - it made more sense to legalize and tax the stuff, than to let all the bootleggers make a fortune!

Can I just point out -- the group hasn't asked to run the ad in Fresno yet - so it's not CBS 47 that is refusing to run it. I believe the stations were in Southern California.
I don't think running the ad is LIKE condoning an illegal activity. That would be like saying when a station runs a political ad for a candidate, they're supporting that person even though they run ads from all the candidates. Hopefully the public is smart enough to know that commercials are paid ads, and not comments from a station.

You're absolutely right, FresnoMom.  I asked the question rhetorically:  Should we run the spot, if we're asked to.  At this point, I don't believe the station has been approached.  It'll be interesting to see what happens, if we ever get to that point!

I remember seeing a program on Discovery once that stated that marijuana was not always against the law. If you treat it like alcohol, , put some controls on the quality and use it as medicnal only, I don't see a problem. I think 47 should run the ads if they are asked. Do I think it will solve the budget problem? No. But it would help a little bit. Will California wake up and smell the coffee? No.

Interesting info from Wikipedia:  The United States Census of 1850 counted 8,327 hemp "plantations" with a minimum 2,000-acre farm growing cannabis hemp for cloth, canvas and even the cordage used for baling cotton.

Utah in 1910 outlawed the growing of hemp for any reason followed by Wyoming in 1915, Texas in 1919 and the rest of the US by 1927.
