How big was the Super Bowl??? Huge!

URGENT

Super Bowl most watched TV show ever!

By DAVID BAUDER (AP)

NEW YORK - The Super Bowl was watched by more than 106

million people, surpassing the 1983 finale of "M-A-S-H" to become

the most-watched program in television history.

The Nielsen Co. estimated Monday that 106.5 million people

watched the New Orleans Saints upset the Indianapolis Colts. That

beats the "M-A-S-H" finale, which had 105.97 million viewers in

an era when there were fewer television sets.

Compelling story lines involving the city of New Orleans and its

recovery from Hurricane Katrina and the quest for a second Super

Bowl ring for Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning propelled the

viewership.

The game also obliterated the previous record viewership for a

Super Bowl - last year's game between Arizona and Pittsburgh in

which 98.7 million people watched.

More TV viewers tuned in to watch the Saints beat the Colts than to any Super Bowl in more than 20 years, according to preliminary ratings figures.

There might have been less TV sets when M.A.S.H. aired its finale, more of a factor though was that there were less programs for people to watch in those days....less channels

Xfactor makes a good point. Fox was not on the air and Cable was not as pervasive either.

Hey, I just hope a good chunk of the massive Super Bowl audience stuck around to see our "Special Edition" of CBS47 News Sunday night after the game!

Super Bowl XLIV is the first sports program to ever domestically crack 100 million viewers. Granted, the population has grown from when the "M*A*S*H" finale aired, with the TV audience having climbed from 218 million viewers to 292 million. Yet that audience is also much more specialized and segmented in terms of viewing habits. Most broadcast shows struggle to pull ratings that were commonplace just a few years ago.
